Donald Trump will be barred from Facebook until at least 2023, according to the company.

The Oversight Board’s decision to maintain Trump’s suspension was noted in a long statement released by Nick Clegg, Facebook’s VP of Global Affairs. The board also confirmed the site has made a number of improvements to its ban rules and procedures adding that Facebook has opted to adopt 15 of the board’s total 19 recommendations in their entirety.

In Trump’s instance, he will be barred from using the company’s platforms, Facebook and Instagram for two years, beginning on January 7, the day of his first banning. Experts will be called in January 2023 to determine if the concern for public safety continues.

Should it still remain unsafe, the ban will be extended for a second time. If the panel concludes that the concern is no more, the suspension will be lifted, however, future infractions will be subject to a “strict set of rapidly escalating sanctions.” Any additional infractions might result in Trump’s accounts being deactivated permanently.

Speaking on the extension of Trump’s suspension, Clegg said: “We know today’s decision will be criticized by many people on opposing sides of the political divide—but our job is to make a decision in as proportionate, fair, and transparent a way as possible.”

Trump’s ban came shortly after his permanent ban from Twitter, following his tweets that allegedly led to the Capitol riots and insurrection. Click here to read more.
