Following the disturbing riots and horrific attacks by Trump supporters on the Capitol in the past days, celebrities and well-respected persons of the society have been vocal on social media, calling out on social media platforms to ban the President’s social media accounts as its been used to incite violence and help spread baseless allegations of voting fraud.

Celebrities such as Selena Gomez and Sacha Baron Cohen were among those verbal about the use of social media by Trump and his supporters to incite violence whilst calling out the social media heads for enabling them to do so with their platforms.

Finally, days after the pressure has been mounted, Twitter has permanently suspended Trump’s account. The statement posted read: “After close review of recent Tweets from the
@realDonaldTrump
account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.”

They went on to say: “In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action.”

Then added: “Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.”

Then ended by saying: “However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules and cannot use Twitter to incite violence. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement.”
