Despite a two-decade-long career in Hollywood, acclaimed actor Djimon Hounsou has revealed that he continues to face financial struggles and systemic barriers in the entertainment industry.
In a recent interview with CNN Africa, the two-time Oscar-nominated actor candidly discussed feeling underpaid, overlooked, and disrespected, even with a resume that includes major blockbuster films and critical acclaim.
“I’m still struggling to make a living,” Hounsou shared. “I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m still struggling financially. I’m definitely underpaid.”
Hounsou’s reflections on his career highlight deep-seated issues within the industry. He described being dismissed early in his career as someone who had “just got off the boat,” a harmful perception that, according to him, still shapes the opportunities and respect he receives. “Even though I successfully did that, they just didn’t feel like I was an actor to whom they should pay any respect,” Hounsou explained.
Hounsou explains that the lack of recognition has led to a sense of frustration and inequity. “I’ve come up in the business with some people who are absolutely well-off and have very little of my accolades,” he told The Guardian in a 2023 interview. “I feel cheated, tremendously cheated, in terms of finances and in terms of the workload as well.”
Hounsou also called out the ongoing issue of systemic racism in Hollywood, emphasising that true diversity remains elusive. “This conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go,” he said. “Systemic racism won’t change like that anytime soon.”
Despite these challenges, Hounsou takes pride in his ability to sustain a career in an industry that often limits opportunities for Black actors. “I’ve been able to sustain a career, and I think that’s something to highlight and acknowledge,” he said, adding that the lack of progress in addressing his earlier concerns has only deepened his resolve to continue his journey.
