It would appear that Dizzee Rascal still holds a grudge against Glastonbury for passing him over in favor of Gorillaz when they were in desperate need of a headliner.
During the Glastonbury 2010 Festival, Dizzee was in line to perform after the likes of Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson, and Vampire Weekend, where his set was scheduled just before U2, the festival’s initial headliners, but the rock band was forced to withdraw due to vocalist Bono’s back ailment.
Dizzee of course assumed that moving one slot up to the coveted headlining spot would be a done deal, but Glastonbury organizers instead decided to go with virtual group Gorillaz in place of U2.
Dizzee still has a grudge over the choice, saying on the JD In The Duffle Bag Podcast, “I should have headlined Glastonbury.”
Adding: “I’ve done Glastonbury since I think 2008, might have been the first time I did it.
“I was one from the headline, and then someone dropped out, so they should have moved me up, but then they put on Gorillaz or someone.”
Dizzee explained why he feels he wasn’t offered the closing performance at Glastonbury: “It’s the confidence, they didn’t have the confidence.”
“Even though they’d seen me smashing the s**t out of it, they were just scared. And then Gorillaz came on, and no offence to them, but you’re not getting the same thing.”
Before saying: “You can’t put them on after me – are you alright?”
However, Dizzee’s 2010 act was a smash hit, with fans adoring his live renditions of hits including Stand Up Tall, Holiday, You’ve Got The Love, and Dance Wiv Me.
Dizzee’s comments come as the rapper marked the 18th anniversary of his groundbreaking first album, ‘Boy In Da Corner,’ which was released on July 22, 2001, and is widely considered as one of the best grime albums ever made.
