Clive Davis reportedly died on Monday at his Manhattan apartment. He was 94. Earlier in 2026 he had been hospitalised for an upper respiratory issue but recovered. Davis’ passing marks the end of a career that reshaped the landscape of recorded music across more than half a century.
Clive’s career started as a record company lawyer and built himself into one of the most influential figures in music history. He had an ear for what worked — so reliable that people called him “the man with the golden ear” — and he used it to sign and launch the careers of Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Patti Smith, and Lou Reed among others. He won four Grammys for producing albums by Kelly Clarkson, Carlos Santana, and Jennifer Hudson. He also hosted pre-Grammy parties that became industry touchstones, including the one Whitney Houston was scheduled to attend before her death in 2012.
Springsteen remembered him with clarity: “At 22 years old, he changed my life when he signed me to Columbia Records. He treated me with the same respect and kindness as a 22-year-old nobody as he did after all my success. A great man.” Alicia Keys called him “a visionary who transformed dreams into reality, leaving an indelible mark on music and lives worldwide.” Patti Smith thanked him for “transforming music, and on a very personal note, for believing in me, shepherding my efforts and a half century of your love and support.”
His family released a statement that balanced his professional impact with his personal one: “To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives. To his family, Clive was Dad and Granddaddy, the steady presence at the center of our lives, the source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love. No matter how extraordinary his professional accomplishments, he never lost sight of what mattered most: the people he loved.”
He is survived by four children, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his partner Greg Schriefer.
