Ciara claims that her label didn’t appear interested when she explained her ambitions for “Level Up” and her project to them.

As part of the Juneteenth celebrations in the United States, a number of companies and television networks celebrated the federal holiday, including ABC News, which held a celebrity-filled event called Sound of Freedom – A Juneteenth Celebration, which Ciara made an appearance at.

During her conversation on the show, Ciara discussed how she ended up with her masters. Prior to her insight into the matter, there had been rumours that her husband, Russell Wilson, acquired them for her as a present, but Ciara is now disclosing how it all went down.

Sharing how her acquiring her masters has influenced her creative ability and given her freedom, Ciara said:

“I had this song called ‘Level Up,’ I had the video for the song as well. I had a whole vision for my project,” said Ciara spoke of her chart-topping viral single.

“I sat down and I talked to the CEO at that time. It was like, he made up his mind before I came into the room. He wasn’t checking for it.”

She goes on to explain how that encounter motivated her to acquire her masters and advance her career on her own, under her own label.

“Amazingly enough, they gave me my masters,” she added. “They gave them to me for free! So, it lets you know they didn’t believe at all… It was that easy and I was ready.”

Ciara expressed gratitude for being able to keep her masters in this manner, as opposed to many artists who have to contend for their masters with their label.

Following the likes of Taylor Swift, Ashanti, and others who have expressed their reasons for re-recording their masters in order to regain complete ownership of their work, this subject has become more debated in recent years.
