Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend have vehemently denied any credibility to a publicized direct message exchange between Teigen and fashion designer Michael Costello saying it’s “completely fake.”

Costello shared alleged screenshots of a discussion between Teigen and himself from 2014, in which Teigen accuses him of being a racist because of a “photoshopped comment.”

“Racist people like you deserve to suffer and die,” Teigen writes to Costello in the now-deleted screenshots. You might as well be dead. Your career is over, just watch.”

However, according to an Insider investigation, these DMs may not have been genuine. For starters, Teigen’s account does not have a confirmed checkmark next to it. Teigen was verified in early 2015 after Instagram implemented verification in 2014, which suggests that the supposed screenshots obtained in 2014.

According to the report, which Teigen confirmed, the blue and purple message look was not deployed until 2020, and the video chat button at the top of the screen was not implemented until June 2018.

Teigen issued a comment on Twitter on Friday, writing, “No idea what the f*ck Michael Costello is doing. He just released a statement where he didn’t at ALL acknowledge how fake the DMs were, & now claims to have emails that don’t exist.”

The included statements shared by Teigen read:

Her husband John legend also weighed in on Twitter, defending Teigen as he explained:

“Chrissy apologized for her public tweets, but after her apology, Mr. Costello fabricated a DM exchange between them. This exchange was made up, completely fake, never happened.”

He went on to add:

This comes after Teigen issued a comprehensive apology earlier this week for prior comments directed against model and reality TV star Courtney Stodden.
