Chrisette Michele gets candid, opening up about why her acceptance to perform during former President Donald Trump’s inauguration ‘was the wrong thing to do’ citing her gradual fall from grace following the ceremony.
The GRAMMY Award-winner was condemned by fans, critics, and artists alike for what many felt was her alignment with Trump’s divisive ideas, and she received a harsh reaction as a result of the event. Furthermore, the singer’s fan base deserted her, resulting in a rapid drop in sales, touring possibilities, and, ultimately, the termination of her record deal.
Speaking openly during an episode of a popular Youtube series, ‘TERRELL’ on Thursday, June 10th, the once-adored singer shared on being ‘canceled’ and the reason her move was definitely the wrong thing to do.
She addressed her performance at the inauguration, saying: “It was the wrong thing to do,’ she said before continuing, ‘I’ve never said it publicly…”
Michele on whether she has regrets for performing said: “ don’t regret it, I learned a lot.”
On the rumour that she was paid $750,000 for her performance, she said: “I did not do it for the money,” she explained and later added, “you don’t get paid to do political events as an American citizen.’” She went on to clarify, “that would’ve been really awesome but [it was nowhere near that].”
Michele addressed the only silver lining of the backlash: “Hopefully, my recovery shows people that after misunderstanding and rejection there is evolution and you get to come back and do it again by the grace of God.”
