According to TMZ, Emelike Nwosuocha, who goes by the stage name Kidd Wes, claims that Gambino’s hit is a ripoff of his own single “Made in America,” which was first released on SoundCloud in late 2016. Wes claims that the hook of Gambino’s music is “unmistakably substantially similar, if not practically identical” to his song, according to court records quoted in Thursday’s article.

Wes also cited the two tracks’ flow and lyrical elements, claiming that he was “intentionally ripped off.” Donald Glover, Young Thug, the track’s co-writers, Roc Nation, and the label are included in the lawsuit.

Fam Udeorji, Gambino’s co-manager, had to previously address other attempted ripoff allegations in 2018, by submitting a timeline of how “This Is America” came to be. Particularly, the track’s emergence does not correspond to rumors of a blatant 2016 ripoff.

It’s worth noting that, according to Fam, the roots of “This Is America” dates back to 2015. Gambino’s team has the Pro Tools files to back up their claims.

“This Is America” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart upon its release and went on to garner triple platinum by the RIAA.
