‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ which chronicles the life of Blues singer Ma Rainey and based on August Wilson’s play of the same name, will be directed by George C. Wolfe and produced by Denzel Washington.

The movie is set in Chicago in 1927 and will explore the issues of race, music, relationships, and exploitation of Black recording artists. Starring in the movie are Viola Davis, who plays Ma Rainey, and Chadwick Boseman who plays Ma Rainey’s love interest Levee, an ambitious trumpeter who aspired to leave his mark in the Chicago music scene by adding a contemporary spin on old-fashioned songs.

‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,’ also stars Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown, and Taylour Paige. 

The movie is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix on December 18th.
