Marcel Theo Hall, better known as Biz Markie, was born in Harlem, New York, on April 8, 1964. When he began his career as a young beatboxer and freestyle rapper in New York City, Biz Markie chose his stage name.

Most recently, Biz has been seen in scores of episodes of Nick Jr.’s kid’s show ‘Yo Gabba Gabba!,’ while guest-starring on the Fox Network’s ‘In Living Color and in the film Men in Black II.’

Biz Markie was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in his late forties and claims to have shed 140 pounds in the years thereafter. In 2014, he told ABC News, “I wanted to live.” The cause of death is unclear, although he was admitted to the hospital last year owing to diabetic problems.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Friday, his rep said:

“We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time. Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years. He leaves behind a wife, many family members and close friends who will miss his vibrant personality, constant jokes and frequent banter. We respectfully request privacy for his family as they mourn their loved one.”

Biz’s 35-year-long career evidently impacted many people as several tributes poured in from celebrities and fans alike, shortly after the news of his death surfaced. E40, Kirk Franklin, Viola Davis, Missy Elliot, Bootsy Collins, and others paid tribute to Biz Markie on social media.
