The Nia DaCosta-directed horror film grossed $9.1 million on Friday from 3,569 theaters and is expected to earn another $11 million over the weekend. The film’s audience was diverse, with 37% black, 22% Latino, 29% white, and 12% Asian/other. The film reportedly drew in a higher percentage of male attendees with an estimated total of (53%), with over 60% over the age of 25.
The Universal/MGM/Monkeypaw film is a mystical followup to Bernard Rose’s 1992 horror thriller of the same name. Candyman stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, and others, with Peele, DaCosta, and Win Rosenfeld serving as writers.
The film was initially scheduled to premiere in June last year, but due to the global crisis, the studio postponed the release indefinitely, before later announcing a new release date in September 2020.
