The New Yorker released an exposé outlining how Britney’s court-appointed guardianship came about, including Britney’s years-long struggle to reclaim independence, more than a week after Britney delivered a devastating testimony.
Jia Tolentino and Ronan Farrow met with a variety of people, including a former housekeeper, family friends, and Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears, to learn more about the circumstances which incited the conservatorship.
Lynne said: “I got mixed feelings about everything. I don’t know what to think … It’s a lot of pain, a lot of worry.”
During a phone interview that happened sometime in June, Lynne discussed her daughter’s legal battle, although she remained very cautious, saying she would “hang up abruptly” if a family member unexpectedly stepped into the room while refusing to answer specific questions regarding the dispute.
Lynne’s attorney, Gladstone Jones, described his client as a “very concerned mother” just days after Britney formally petitioned the court to remove her conservatorship.
According to E! News, Jones said in court during last month’s hearing: “I first want to say that was very courageous of Ms. [Britney] Spears. One thing I want to raise with the court … is when she was there in May 2019 that she didn’t feel like she was heard. I feel we need to make sure today that she was heard.”
Britney made a number of alarming accusations during her testimony about the abuse she’s suffered under her conservatorship since it was instituted in 2008. She testified in court via a phone call that she was forced to perform against her wishes, was given lithium, was not allowed to remove her IUD which prevents her from getting pregnant, and had “self-care” withheld from her for a year by her mother.
Jamie Spears, Britney’s father, who is an undesired co-conservator of the singer’s estate with Bessemer Trust was divorced by Lynne in 2002. Lynne had previously backed her daughter’s attempt to have Jamie removed as conservator.
According to the New York Times, in a 2020 court session, Lynne stated her case through her lawyer, describing Britney and Jamie’s relationship as “toxic” and stating that it was “time to start fresh.” Lynne also said that her ex-husband described their daughter as “a racehorse who has to be handled like one.”
The news comes after the singer’s younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears spoke out in support of her older sister following Britney’s testimony in court. It also comes just days after Britney’s request to have her father removed from her conservatorship was denied again by a court on Wednesday. However, it was rejected without prejudice, hence she may petition once again.
Jamie Lynn Spears addresses Britney’s conservatorship testimony in newly shared Instagram stories:
“I think it’s extremely clear since the day I was born I’ve only loved, adored, and supported my sister… I have nothing to gain or lose… This situation does not affect me” pic.twitter.com/Symqw4zPYw

For now, we will have to wait for the next court session slated for July 14.
