Attorney Mathew Rosengart claims in a new lawsuit that Britney Spears’ father, James Spears, is trying to obtain $2 million in payments from the singer before stepping down from the conservatorship.

James’ “true motivation,” according to Rosengart, is to “extort” millions from his daughter in numerous installments, as per Variety’s Gene Maddaus report. According to a filing obtained by Complex, James seeks the payments as part of attorneys costs and “media matters,” among other things.

However, Rosengart argues differently, claiming that James’ efforts are a means to “barter suspension and removal” in exchange for the payments.

The filling read: “Regardless of the past, Mr. Spears and his counsel are now on notice: the status quo is no longer tolerable, and Britney Spears will not be extorted.

“Mr. Spears’ blatant attempt to barter suspension and removal in exchange for approximately $2 million in payments, on top of the millions already repaid from Ms. Spears’ estate by Mr. Spears and his associates, is a non-starter.”

He also noted that, contrary to “the powers that Mr. Spears and his counsel seek to arrogate unto themselves,” they cannot “choose” Mr. Spears leaving time or place, adding that, “Those issues are governed by law, the best interests of Ms. Spears, and by this Court.”

A hearing has been set for September 29th to address Britney Spears’ petition to remove James Spears as conservator.
