Bill Cosby is now facing a new lawsuit from five women who had accused him of sexually assaulting them earlier in their careers.
According to TMZ, the women filed a lawsuit against Cosby on Monday in New York state court. The complaint accuses the 85-year-old of assault, violence, causing emotional distress, and false imprisonment. It also names NBCUniversal as an involved party in the allegations made against Cosby.
The lawsuit was filed under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which gives victims of sexual abuse a one-year window in which to pursue complaints that would have otherwise been precluded by the statute of limitations.
The filing names Jewel Gittens, Jennifer Thompson, Cindra Ladd, a former Hollywood executive who previously accused Cosby of raping her in 1969, and actresses Lili Bernard and Eden Tirl as plaintiffs, all of whom made appearances on The Cosby Show.
According to the lawsuit, “Each plaintiff was sexually assaulted and battered by defendant Bill Cosby in the same or similar manner when he used his power, fame, and prestige, including the power, fame, and prestige given to him by [the] defendants … to misuse his enormous power in such a nefarious, horrific way.”
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Jordan Rutsky, also said, “It was well-known that Bill Cosby would regularly take young women into his dressing room, and when you read the complaint, you’ll see there were instances where staff saw this happening and even encouraged the plaintiff to submit.”
In response to the lawsuit, Cosby’s spokesperson, Andrew Wyatt, dismissed the allegations and claimed that the lawsuit is an attempt to make money.
“As we have always stated, and now America can see, this isn’t about justice for victims of alleged sexual assault, it’s ALL ABOUT MONEY,” Wyatt stated. “We believe that the courts, as well as the court of public opinion, will follow the rules of law and relieve Mr. Cosby of these alleged accusations. Mr. Cosby continues to vehemently deny all allegations waged against him and looks forward to defending himself in court.”
The new lawsuit comes months after the 87-year-old was released from prison after serving more than two years of his three-to-ten-year sentence for sexual assault involving multiple women.
