Jay-Z took the stage at Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic with an afro instead of his signature dreadlocks, a shift Beyoncé recently documented in a diary-style video released after his performance. The transformation took over five days and involved combing out his locs — a process that required heavy use of Cécred, Beyoncé’s haircare line.
Beyoncé is seen in the room for the transformation, actively participating in the styling, which speaks to how this was not just a aesthetic choice but a family decision.
Why the change? Jay-Z decided to grow his hair to help their daughter Blue Ivy embrace and love her own tresses, that motivation matters, as it reframes the whole transformation from a random switch-up into something deliberate and personal, with the diary video keeping that same tone.

Meanwhile, during Hov’s Roots Picnic act, he delivered a 90-minute set and brought out Jazmine Sullivan, Meek Mill, and Bilal. He also reunited State Property members Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Peedi Crakk, and Young Gunz on stage — something that had not happened in years. He also dropped a freestyle during the set which took jabs at Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Tory Lanez, and Dame Dash, and it caught enough attention that Charlamagne Tha God, Bobby Shmurda, and LeBron James all reacted publicly.
Hov has three more historic shows coming at the Yankee Stadium on July 10th, 11th, and 12th. The first celebrates 30 years of Reasonable Doubt, while the second marks 25 years of The Blueprint. The third, an “Extra Innings” show, was added due to demand and the afro will probably be there for all of it.
