As we reported back in April, the legendary DJ took to social media to announce her departure from radio, while also explaining her reason for the exit and what’s next for her.

At the time, Annie explained to her fans, saying: “I need more time to see my kids in the evenings now they are both in school. I would like more time to write fiction and to create podcasts.”

Adding: “I love the idea of leaving the party… when I’m still having the most fun I can have.”

During her last show on BBC Radio 1 Friday night, Annie was audibly tearful and seemingly overcome with emotions as she prepared to sign off from her final Dance Party program.

On the penultimate edition of Radio 1’s Dance Party with Annie Mac, the 43-year-old presenter who has been with the station for 17 years, concluded her broadcast duties.

Annie’s voice trembled shortly before her final song as she revealed a message from her father which she said had finally broken the dam and “floored me.”

Annie explained while expressing her gratitude to her parents for their support and dedication to her career, saying:

“They live in Dublin and you couldn’t get Radio 1 very well back in the day, and at the start of my shows they used to sit out in the car and listen to my shows.”

Annie picked herself up as she prepared to make her last link after a set that included the A-Trax remix of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Heads Will Roll, Chase & Status’ Take Me Away, and Calvin Harris’ Flashback.

She said: “I wanted to end with a song that is everything I love in dance music. A song that is completely warm and takes you on a journey somewhere completely different. A song that expands your imagination, a song that is transcendent.”

Annie then expressed her sincere gratitude to her audience after introducing one of her “all-time favorite songs,” DJ Rolando’s Knights of the Jaguar.

“As a 43-year-old woman, I can just tell you this: life goes by really, really fast,” the DJ said as she returned to the tune. “Life is short. It thunders by.”

“And if you like the music, you’ve gotta get up and dance. Just do it.”

Fellow presenters and colleagues at BBC Radio 1 took to social media to share kind words to the legendary DJ.
