Ariana Grande has released the video for “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the lead single from her upcoming album Petal. Directed by Christian Breslauer, the clip runs as a short horror film depicting Justin Long playing her murderous lover and It opens with him burying her, however, she refuses to stay buried.
The rest of the video follows Long‘s character trying to erase any trace of the relationship and failing, because Grande returns as a ghost who is not interested in letting him move on. It is gothic, deliberately cinematic, and sits closer to a narrative short than anything she has put out before. The themes are familiar enough — obsession, betrayal, a love that refuses to disappear even when someone tries to kill it — but the treatment is a clear departure from the bright, polished aesthetic her videos have typically leaned on.
Petal follows Eternal Sunshine, which came out in 2024. In the time between, Grande has been in the middle of a busy film stretch including her roles in the Wicked franchise, and Focker-In-Law, due in November 2026.
Whether the rest of Petal carries the same darker energy, or whether this is the outlier that sets the tone before the album goes somewhere more unexpected, is still an intriguing question. For now, the single and its video are doing what a good lead single should, which is making it harder to wait for the album.
