According to Deadline, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have both been cast as leads in Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of ‘Wicked.’
Erivo will portray future Wicked Witch Elphaba, with Grande starring as Glinda the Good, the ever-“Popular” social climber.
Wicked, written by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holtzman (based on Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name), has been a mainstay on Broadway for the past 18 years, winning Tony Awards, a Grammy, and over a billion dollars in box office earnings.
A film adaption has been in the works for nearly as long but there have been multiple delays along the way, including that of producers, who appear to have reservations about releasing a film for cinema’s if it will be available to stream at home.
Both Erivo and Ariana have been hard at work in recent times, with the former playing Aretha Franklin in Genius while Ariana is basking in the success of her latest album, “Positions.”
However, both stars are poised to take over Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth’s iconic roles. No news on who will portray the other characters in Chu’s film adaptation, including the deceptive and menacing Wiz Who Was.
